Our story

Two Tanzanian children laughing together, hugging, looking at the camera

The idea for Tierra de Amani grew out of repeated visits to Tanzania by its founder, Pía Lisa Flooks.

Pía Lisa worked as a volunteer in several children's shelters. There, she witnessed the immense challenges faced by street children, including extreme poverty, loneliness, violence, and in some cases, exposure to child abuse.

Children from rural areas head to tourist cities in search of food or work. But the reality is far harsher: almost all end up on the streets, begging, exposed to abuse, and eventually to drugs.

When visiting the surrounding rural areas, Pía Lisa saw the heartbreaking level of poverty in which many families survive: with scarce resources, living in severely dilapidated shacks, and in the case of HIV-positive individuals, the marginalization and rejection they face.

The need to create Tierra de Amani arose after numerous visits to Tanzania by its founder, Pía Lisa Flooks.

Local NGOs worked very hard to support the huge number of orphans, children, and adolescents living on the street in northern Tanzania, as well as single-parent families where mothers carry the weight of the fragile family economy. Getting to know this work closely served as the inspiration to launch Tierra de Amani.

Just like many aid workers who, after a period of volunteering, return to their countries filled with sad stories, our founder felt the need to contribute in some way to improving those harsh realities. Back in Spain, and together with other people who were also touched by the situation, she founded Tierra de Amani, a non-profit dedicated to supporting the most disadvantaged children and adolescents in Tanzania, and by extension, their families.

Since its creation and up to the present day, Tierra de Amani has grown into a solid, stable NGO that enjoys the support of many friends, members, and sponsors. Since late 2009, the NGO has also been registered as an NGO in Tanzania, where it has a small headquarters in Moshi, in the north of the country.

Members of the Board of Directors visit Tanzania at least twice a year, covering their own expenses, to make sure the funds are used properly. During these visits they oversee the work on the ground — seeing everything firsthand is essential to understand both the progress made and any problems that come up. It's also a chance to share ideas with the staff working day-to-day in Tanzania and to follow closely the development of the children and youth in the projects.

We account for all funds and results, both to the sponsors and partners who support us and to the institutions that fund us.

Tierra de Amani is registered with the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga, Spain: No. 6821. NIF: G-92625920z

Members of the Board of Directors visit Tanzania at least twice a year, covering their own expenses, to ensure the correct use of the funds sent. During these visits, the work carried out is supervised, and it is fundamental to witness everything firsthand to better understand the progress achieved as well as any possible problems that may arise. This is a great opportunity to share ideas with the staff working day-to-day in Tanzania and to closely follow the development of the children and adolescents who are part of the projects.

All funds and objectives achieved must be properly justified, both to the sponsors and partners who support us, and to the institutions that grant us subsidies.
